Edwardo Richardson Memorial Agriculture Foundation.
Edwardo Richardson was a well out spoken and recognized farmer, who up to the end of his life in 2002, was involve in farming on the Emilio Wilson Estate. He farmed in various locations on this island including Diamond estate and Cay Bay. Before he moved to Emilio Wilson estate, he cultivated crops in the hills of South Reward, on the backside of Colombier. Here he and his son had over 1000 banana trees growing, between 1979 and 1984.
Lots of labor went into structuring this parcel of land, including the building of a large concrete reservoir, building of rock terraces and planting of numerous fruit trees.
He was part of numerous agricultural organizations on the island and was honored in 2010 as one of our national heroes. Today a portrait of Mr. Richardson hangs on the wall of parliament to his recognition.
Moto: To promote agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries in the broadest sense of the word possible.
Mission statement: Our mission is to use our in-house agricultural expertise and regional contacts to help and stimulate agro-production on the island, and to collaborate with government and other stakeholders in providing food security. We will achieve this through organizing of lectures, seminars, short courses and agricultural exhibitions.
Our Core Goals: To insure all people of all ages have available to them, an introduction to agriculture from planting to harvesting. We do this through collaboration with Hillside Plantation in establishing a model “commercial farm” on the hillside. As all remaining lands on our island are on the slopes of hills, this farm will demonstrate how to approach farming on the slopes of these hills in a productive and sustainable manner. Other people and organizations will be able to visit, see and copy, and improve where possible.
We will educate and promote home gardening, introduction to horticulture as vocational activity, introduce and increase, aquaponics and hydroponics demonstrations and exhibitions of food safety training. (from farm to table)
Our projects: Classes on protecting your plants from pests, woodworking to make your our planters, agriculture awareness and farming for schools and the community.
Our events: Open market fairs, (selling of fruits vegetables and other agri- products), wood working/ recycling, treasure hunt on farm or through the trails, educational nature hikes, camping and fundraisers like Easter egg hunts and seasonal specials.
Our partners: We want to partner with a variety of institutions on SXM. We have already at one time or another worked with every public and private primary and secondary school on the Dutch side. We love to work with other NGO’s and nature foundations and are always looking those that want to facilitate core essentials of the foundation.
Our world: Introduction to world situation and increasing awareness, as food is concern. Over the years there have been a loud cry from international charity organizations of the coming dilemma of food security for small island states and developing countries. They were cries of eminent starvation in many parts of the world. One always has to wonder if these communities ever got relief from starvation.
